Details I Adore - Pediments

Today I’m talking pediments and why I love them. I’m not sure when this particular obsession started, but here I am, loving pediments and wanting to incorporate them when it’s appropriate.

For the record, here is how Wikipedia describes a pediment:

“Pediments are a form of gable in classical architecture, usually of a triangular shape. Pediments are placed above the horizontal structure of the cornice, or entablature if supported by columns.”

The strongest shape for a pediment is the classic closed triangle often seen over exterior entryways and/or windows. It’s my favorite.

The pediments combined with these gold leaf neoclassical swags make such a beautiful statement!

You know what else I love about the image above? It’s the strong masculine shape of the pediment juxtaposed with the ornate (some would say “frilly”) gold detail.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Contrast creates interest. The white pediment against the dark painted brick, the feminine with the masculine. It all works together to create that beautiful tension that instantly draws your eye.

Great news! Pediments don’t have to be exclusively used on the exterior of a home. Here are some examples of pediments used in home interiors.

More of this please.

Yes to these pediment topped cabinets in this pink kitchen designed by Sean Symington. Side note: Why are we not doing more pink kitchens? See what I mean about the feminine/masculine tension in this space? Like I say when I have greek yogurt and berries for breakfast and then a double cheeseburger meal for lunch. It’s about balance.

A fireplace is always a natural focal point in the room. Why not make it even more prominent by incorporating a pediment… or 2. Layered and lovely design by the late Furlow Gatewood.

Would you ever have thought to create this fabulous pediment topped range alove? The Makerista did and it makes perfect sense in her new build to look old Greek Revival style home.

Yes, you can even find bookcases, furniture and mirrors topped with pediments. We will not be stopped.

The stellar work of Suzanne Kasler. Her editing skills are meticulous. Sounds easy, but in reality quite challenging. The mirror is the decisive focal point with its crunbly details in an otherwise pristine space. You know what I’m say next right? Tension.
